Re: Water pump housing hole out of round

Well it's happy days all around! Turns out I was overreacting like a nervous new father, the whole problem was the impeller. With a new one in the water pumps fine at all RPMs. Played hooky friday and went for a nice 40 mile trip on the river with the wife. :) Thanks to all who posted info and help. The most important part is sharing the knowledge.

Re: Water pump housing hole out of round

I'm having the same problem on my 200 94 merc. I took off the impeller after replacing it about 2 hours on the motor. I may have run it dry for 1 minute. Under the pump housing there is a large bearing. I have a lot of play in the drive shaft left to right ect and it wore out the last pump cap like the pics above. I am trying to get that bearing out and replace it. There is some type of retaining ring to tap out unscrew. under it is the bearing. The book says roller bearing. Will all the rollers fall out upon removal? And will it slide off the drive shaft with out removing it from the gearcase? Thanks Wheaticat@aol.com

You might wanna check your manual. Bad news, I think what you think is a retaining ring is actually a lip on the driveshaft itself. To get the upper driveshaft bearing out (the one just below the water pump), I'm pretty sure you need to remove the driveshaft, then bearings are replaced and driveshaft put back. The upper bearings on my V6 are tapered in a race (look like a trailer wheel bearing), it's the lower driveshaft bearings that are roller bearings and might fall out once you pull the driveshaft out.

BTW, removing the driveshaft isn't that easy. You've got to pull the bearing carrier & reverse gear off the back of the LU and take the propshaft out in order to undo the pinion nut & gear from the bottom end of the driveshaft. If you're going in there anyway, you might wanna think about other bearings along the way, particularly the lower driveshaft bearing if you've got a loose driveshaft. I ended up making the tools needed to get mine apart, but I'll confess it took me many hours to do it (a lot of beer drinking/head scratchin' time built in there). In my case I wanted to get it apart myself, because I thought all gears etc might have been wrecked, and I wanted to know whether to buy a complete LU before I got into paying a wrench for his time. I did it on the off season, so time wasn't a big deal.

Anyway, you might be able to get a firm price for the cost of doing just driveshaft bearings from a shop. A good manual is your friend! I have Seloc and find it pretty good. Good luck.

Brent

thanks brent, I have a seloc manual too. I think the bearing under the water pump is a held together one. Also the retaining ring i think comes out with a spanner wrench. it also is marked which way to turn it. counterclockwise.
I really don't want to rebuild it my self as I am good at taking them apart but the opposite at putting them back together. I may just try a new impeller as the old one is only around 2 hours old
but has some bends in it.
