water pump I6

Hello, I have a 1976 Mercruiser 165. I have the engine out of the boat and would like to replace the inblock circulation pump while it is easily accessible. Can I go to an auto parts store for this part, or does it need to be marine specific? The engine does use a heat exchanger, so the pump will only see anti freeze.
Thanks,
Alan

If you are using coolant and not seawater, then a standard automotive pump will be fine, and seriously less expensive than the Merc genuine article...

you should be able to pick one up from any of the local autoparts stores. the engine is a GM 250 cubic inch six. if the local autoparts store clerk cant look up marine engines, have him look up a '76 1/2 ton truck with the 250

Not only that, it is still incredibly accessible even with the engine in the boat, unless your boat is arranged in an unusual way.

With the belt off, spinning the water pump results in a somewhat unhappy bearing sound.... while the engine is sitting on a stand, I think I will go ahead and replace it. I will ask the local auto parts guy for a w/pump for a '76 half ton I 6. Thanks.
