I just bought a 1976 7.5HP merc outboard and the guy said he had just fixed the water pump. I started it up and it was pumping water just fine until I heard a clunk and then the water out of the top hole (tattle-tale?) fell way off in volume. Assuming I had another water pump problem, I took it apart for inspection. The manual says the impeller arms should be curled in a counter- clockwise direction while mine were curled in a clockwise direction. When i twist the drive shaft by hand forward or backward (the engine was put in forward before I dropped the lower unit as per the manual), the rubber impeller arms will reorient themselves and twist into a clockwise or counter clockwise direction depending on which way the drive shaft is twisting. Should they do this? THis is with the cover off, I have not tried it with the cover on. Should it switch depending on which way the shaft is rotating. Of course the drive shaft should only rotate in one direction, but since the blades were in the wrong orientation upon dissasembly, I was wondering if this was my problem. I have not blown out the passages with compressed air to see if there is just some minor obstruction blocking the tattle tale but will do that tonight.

Thanks
Mike
