Gentlemen
I have removed the four bolts holding the lower leg to the upper unit and the lower leg comes down about 2 inches. I can see the impeller yet I cannot figure out how to detach the shift rod. Externally I cannot see how to disconnect the shift lever . what am I missing? Does the shaft that drives the lower unit gear box need to be detached? How? Help thanks in advance. Dom

You must remove the powerhead from the exhaust tower to get at the shift linkage. There are only 7 screws holding the powerhead on so its not a big job.

I should also have mentioned to replace the cork gasket p/n BRP 303355 (Sierra 18-2892) and o-ring p/n BRP 303347 (Sierra 18-7180) while you have the powerhead off (about $2-3). They are part of the lower crankcase seal and they sit on top of a roll pin at the top of the driveshaft. Also inspect the carbon seal and washer that makes up the rest of the assembly at the same time.

Wayne would it be the same setup for the 54 7.5 hp? Id imagine so.

If so, online manual here, refer to page 21 for the water pump, courtesy of Mr Steven Ott.

/wayne thouht i would share a rookie teaching point. You were right 7 bolts not hard to remove the power head. Found the shift mechanism disconnected it and changed the impeller. Funny wheninstalling the power head noted that there was little tension on the spring mechanism. Then I note the rollpin in my vise grip! Practice makes perfect. Did the procedure much faster the second time. Then mumma-mia I note the brass cup that sits atop the rollpin in my parts cup! even more facile the third time. Came on line and noted your second message to replace the gasket for the power head and the O-ring. Iam laughing and having fun. Should I use some medium lock tight on the power head and foot bolts? thanks again Dom

lol - Sounds like my first one. No loctite on anything you may need to remove again. Just even torque, like Chris said.
