Hi All. My old '79 v175 needs to have this done and I'm seriously considering doing the work myself but at the same time I'm a little apprehensive about it. I have the seloc manual and have read thru this a few times but wanted to get some feedback from folks here on this and if its something the average garage mechanic can do. Also, are there any other gotchas I should be weary of? Someone mentioned to me that the motor seal that prevents water from getting into the power head may need to be changed once you pull the lower unit off, is this one of the things I should anticipate having to do too? If I decide to do this are there any other parts, tools, that I should get?

Thanks in advance for any advice, tips or tricks that you may have for this.

It's a very simple job with a manual to look at, I don't know were some clown caame up with the seal story but it sounds like some one trying to inflate there labor time. Have at it.

Re: Water pump/impeller replacement - part # help

Well I thought I was ready to go but I'm seeing conflicting part #'s for the complete kit with the housing and base; even on this site. Can anyone confirm whether or not Sierra 18-3317 is the one I'd need for this motor. For reference, this motor is a 1979 175HP model with S/N# 5266929

Thanks!

Re: Water pump/impeller replacement

If it was built before 1985 it uses the 18-3316 complete kit.
