water pump impeller

I have a 1994 mercury 40 horse 4 cylinder out board, i pulled the lower unit off today and there is no impeller, i cant find anything that looks like an impeller, please help.

Did you remove the waterpump housing? <br /><br />Should be a plastic housing with four bolts that slides down over the driveshaft.

The impeller could've possibly disintergrated, poke around the water passages and retrive all the broken pieces you can find.
