Water pump impeller

Went fishing today and noticed the water wasnt coming out of pee hole in a steady stream while boat was at idle or when trolling. Seems like last year it came out steady no matter what. This is only the 2nd year i have had the boat and have never had the impeller replaced. Any advice would help. I do have a Manual. And would like to do repairs myself. The motor is a 1984 Mercury 90hp 2 stroke outboard.

Re: Water pump impeller

you know the water temperature of the lake was 54 degrees and when I had the muffs on it it worked fine at home. And, when I went across the lake it worked fine. Do you think maybe at a trolling speed or idle it wasnt hot enough to open the thermostat all the way?

If in doubt change it out! When you put a hose to your motor think of it this way your already giving some water pressure through the hose. When on the water it has to make up the difference. I replace mine every two years and feel it's cheep insurance,it's easy to do and not expensive. While your at it do the fuel pump at the same time as the fuel now a days have a tendency to be detrimental to them.God luck, take your time and have fun.

You should get water from the pee hole even if you are at idle. A weak impellar and dirt clogging the passage way can cause it. Change the impellar to be on the safe side and then use a small wire to clean out the hole. Run it in as far as you can.

I have been told and follow the rule to replace the water pump every year. The kits are not that expensive and the procedure is pretty easy.

Even the with the boat sitting over winter can damage the rubber impeller. Mine work fine last year but wasn't working after the winter months. After pulling it apart the impeller arms where all split/broken.
