I was pulling my water pump apart and the water impeller is larger than the housing. Is this normal or is it the wrong size impeller?

yes, the blades should be bigger then the hole in the housing that it goes in..

The blades should be bent backwards away from the direction.. ie hold the impeller in one hand, and turn the housing anti-clockwise onto it.. so that when the engine is spinning clockwise.. as it does.. then the blades on the impeller have the tips bent away from the direction of travel.

It is not only supposed to be bigger, it won't work if its not bigger.

rgds

Frank

Hey firemedic,
Yes it's normal. If it weren't so, the pump wouldn't work properly. There cannot be any space between the pump housing and the vanes of the impeller. When installing the new impeller, be sure to turn it clockwise as you put it in the housing.
Backlash

Re: water pump impeller

I have found it easier to install the inpeller and key on the shaft and then lower the housing onto the impeller while turning the shaft. That way I don't have to try and get the key into place through the housing.

Hope this helps

Craig :)
