Water Pump Impellor

I have taken my impellor out of my water pump. My problem is I don't know which way to turn it when I put it back in. Could someone help? My motor is a 1991 Evinrude 40 HP . Thanks

Charlie....the pump rotates in a clockwise direction looking at it from the top.

Which way are the impellor blades turned? It will go clockwise whicheverway the blades are turned. Are the blades curved to the left or right looking down from the top.

I'd change the shift rod "o" ring seal and install new exhaust leg rubber gaskets while I had the lower unit off.

And scrub any black crud off the shift rod ;-)

a shot of wd40 or eq is a good idea on a new imp it should be started and run in a few mins to get its lay to the housing

Impellers will self-right themselves once the motor starts - getting the blades bent the right way is nice, but not critical. It's only a problem is the impeller is placed in backwards, then the motor is stored without being run - then the blades may take a set in the reverse directions...<br />- Scott

Chinewalker are you totally sure about that the book states to make sure you turn the engine the right way when installing the waterpump. also twn you set you points there is a big NOTE that says not to turn the flywheel the opposite way because water pump damage may accure.the waterpump houseing and impeller are very tight i would make sure i turned the engine the right way when installing the new pump

Hi Wayne,<br /> For proper operation of a vaned waterpump impeller, when running at anything more than an idle speed the blades aren't even contacting the outer housing. Rather they fold over a bit on themselves. The blades may not right themselves when turned over dry, but when running in water they will - water puts quite a load on the blades.<br /> This is why the old Mercury Direct-Reversing motors were able to pump water in either direction - the impeller merely switched directions... They had to put one-way valves in the housing so it would push the water in the right direction through the system...<br />- Scott
