Hi, i replaced my water pump. removed hose from thermo housing. Started boat, no water out hose. removed thermo housing and thermostat, started motor . Still no water.
Q1. does that all need to be sealed for water to get through?
Q2. If not any ideas?
Manual doesn't show or say much about water at top end. I am stumped.

Re: Water pump issues 115hp

If it's the same water pump that is on my 65 there really isn't much to it.
The pump is below the water line so there is no "priming" issues.
Was the key in place?
The people that rebuilt my motor neglected to install the grommet between the pick up tube and the water pump.
This forced the pump to fill the entire lower leg before water would get to the power head.
Water came out of the exhaust relief vents like a garden hose.
OH warning came on fequently untill I found the problem.

Key was in place but I am thinking it seemed ti sit in the shaft a long way with very little hang out to catch on impeller. What is the gromet you are talking about.is that the one on top of impeller housing cover.

But it did catch the impeller ?? it should lock the impeller to the driveshaft , you should not be able to turn the impeller whit out the driveshaft following .

Yes , some models also got a short "guiding" tube helping the pick up tube into place .

That I don't know as I installed the impeller into to housing first the put it onto the drive shaft. I have noticed in the manual I don't have the o ring that goes on the outside of housing at the driveshaft. Would that be causing the problem maybe?

They put the O-ring there for a purpose :) ,but I would think you shuld have some waterpressure whit out it .

I would remove the lower unit to recheck everything , just to be shure everything is working .

Get a new key if it's not holding the impeller locked .

You might be able to check the impeller before removing the Lu , tilt up the engine > let the water run out > remove the plugwire ( we do not want the engine to start )> turn the flywheel by hand , you shuld be able to hear the impeller ( sounds like rubber against metal , sqweeking )

You shuld not be running the engine before everything is fixed .

Re: Water pump issues 115hp

Thanks droll, will try that later today. Have only had the motor a few months and looks like it was not getting water for a long time. Hopefully I can work out why. Do you think the two water tubes could possibly be blocked as well?

What's along time ? and did it overheat ( alarm go off ? or other indications ) ,have you tried tutching the cylinder heads ?, you should be able to hold your fingers there for some seconds whit out burning .

Maybe , what's the condition where you do run this engine ,sand ,plants or other thing to create blockade .

Things to do :
Remove Lu , redo the impeller ,make shore everything is working by the book .
Then lower the LU into a water barrel ( water above pumphousing ) , try turning the driveshaft with a drill ,if the the drill can get some rpm ( IF you got a big enught drill ), it should start pumping water , if so > water pump ok .

Next step :
Try connecting your garden hose to the pick up tube ( NOT full pressure ), if there is any blockade you will find it now ( remove the thermostats , they will not work on cold water ;) )
Leave the water running for some time , and look for improvement in the water flow ( IF it's blocked )

After mounting the LU again , reinsert the thermostats before starting the motor .

You are 100% you get the water intake on the LU low enough into the water ? , and no blockade below the waterpump ? ( waterintake ) .
