I bought 74 johnson 40 hp. I got it running and noticed that there was no water coming out of the tell-tale spot. So I shut it down ordered up an impeller and took the lower unit off. The impeller looked a little beat up and the housing was dirty, but everything was intact. The key was fine. I cleaned the plate up and the housing, put in the new impeller and reinstalled it.

Now I started it up and guess what? No water coming out again! WhenI had the lower unit off I took my air hose and LIGHTLY shot some air into the hose that comes out of the water pump and sure enough it came out the tell-tale! Whats going on here?

are you sure you got the water tube lined up properly, and did not pinch the rubber grommet.

would it make a difference if i had it in a tub of water or something? I just have the muffs on it. I took off the plate where the water goes in and its clean in there. I'm stumped here

The tube went into the rubber opening at the top of the water pump. where is this grommet at?

Hi, If you're Johnson is like the Evinrude engine. There would also be a rubber gromet just like the one in the water pump, but on the top of the copper tube that comes from your water pump. I had problems like you, and found the upper rubber gromet was toast. Hope this helps. Bob

I looked at the schematics from johnson and it doesn't look like there is a grommet there, but then again the 74 evinrude schematic doesn't show 1 either. Did you take the powerhead off the exhaust housing to find it? How much fun is that job?

I looked at your engine schematic and saw that the water tube from the water pump has a bell of some sort on the top end. It may be that it goes onto a male tube with an o-ring or something. Any how, tilt your engine and look with a flash light and see if the tube just pulls down out of the exhaust housing, or if there is something up there that holds it. It could be that it was not placed in the proper position before, and the water pump water was just squirtin in the exhaust housing. On my Evinrude, the tube just pulled down out, and I didn't have to pull the exhaust housing. Hope this helps

Yes I was able to buy a gromet, it is the same one that is in the water pump on my motor.
It looks like the upper end of the copper tube on yours, has the copper "flared" bell or something, I don't know if there is a gromet in yours or not. The schematic didn't show one.

I put it in a bucket deep enough to get all the way up to the pump, not just cover the intake holes, problem solved...
