I have a 1987 85hp Force outboard. It's not pumping much water as of late, do I most likely just need the impeller or the entire kit? Also where is the best place to buy online?

Re: Water pump kit or just the impeller

The only way to know if to take it apart and take a look. Take the housing off and check for grooves. Take a look at the gaskets. Be carefull not to put too much torque on the bolts. They are known to break easily.

When you say, it's not pumping much water, do you mean that there is not a steady stream coming out the pee hole? This could simply be a cloged pee hole or hose. Bugs like to get up the tube and cause blockage. But if it's been at least 2 years since the last impeller change, drop the lower unit and take a look. I change my impeller once a season. Cheap and easy to do. But if the gaskets start getting worn, you could start getting water in the lower unit. And if the impeller housing begins to get grooves, a new impleller will not do much good.

Re: Water pump kit or just the impeller

I?ve owned this boat for close to 10 years now & have never even been in the lower unit, so that tells ya it hasn't been changed for some time, infact I wouldn't doubht it has the original impeller in there.. I'm a decent shade tree mechanic; from what I have read this isn't too bad of a job right ? I have had the boat out once this year, at one point is wasn't putting any water out, shut if off & let her cool down, & then headed back to the docks, it started pumping a bit again.

Where would I be able to buy this part online?

i got a 91 force and i found the impeller on-line for like 15-20 dollars. it was a pretty simple process for me to do but i also bought a service Manuel, which has been a life saver. i replace my impeller every year, cause i open the lower unit anyways to check the wearing of it. besides for $20 it is a very important part, not worth the risk of not changing. Here is one place i got mine from
