Hi
Ive bought a water pump kit that contains some parts I dont know where should be.
I have a newer style alpha-one lower unit.
There where 5 gasket for the housing, when I took it apart I had only 3 gasket and one metal plate.
There where also 3 big O-rings, I found one arond the water pump base, but dont know about the other 2.
There where 2 small "rubber hoses" 1/2 inch the biggest and the other half off that.
There where also a little o-ring / rubber washer, and a metall pin that I couldnt find the place for .
I was wondering if something should be at the shift rod or shift shaft?
Any suggestions?
Regards
Affa

Affa, strongly suggest you get a manual that has a blow-up of your drive unit that shows all the parts and gaskets and where they go. I could only guess at it and that's not good enough...also keep in mind that some of these kits have parts for more than one drive....

You must have an early alpha one and not a genII judging by your description. The kit you bought covers a lot of alpha type drives. So you will have parts left over.Just replace the parts that match with the parts removed. If you would like a parts breakdown take a look at this site
http://www.mercruiserparts.biz/MercruiserParts/mercruiser_sterndrive_engines.asp
You can look at pictures of drives as well as part lists.Good Luck :D

Affa, That little black o ring is your oil gallery seal between the upper unit and the lower. It installs in the small drilled oil passage on the starboard side of the lower unit side flange. DO NOT FORGET to install this tiny but valuable little o ring. It seals the oil passage and keeps drive oil in and water out. Run your unit without it and it will quickly self destruct! I agree with Outboardguy. You will not use all of the parts in the kit. I had the same problem when I did mine. Still have all the spare stuff in my loose boat parts bin in the shop. Never know when you might need to use em to fix something else! Look at an exploded parts drawing and replace what you see for your model. Outboardguy's site is a GREAT source of drawings for Merc units. Good luck!

Thanks for all answers, when I took it apart it was a seal of the same kind that is on the vent/fill screw - on the oil passage, not an o-ring, should I use the o-ring?
Regards
Affa

Yes you should use the o ring. Also two of the other o rings go on the drive shaft, there are two grooves in the shaft for them, and one o ring goes in the groove on the bell housing (where the water pickup hose is). HTH's

DougV>
