Water Pump not pumping mercruiser 80

Just replaced impeller and water pump housing on my 67 mercruiser 80. The water tube has some minor damage around bottom where it slides into housing, but appears that seal is good? Is there something special I need to do to get it primed? I can run water directly to block but and to prop but no water comes up from prop through bellows. Water flows through block and back out prop with no problem. Water pump housing came with seal already inside but does it require two seals? Is water tube supposed to slide all the way inside of seal and does sleave just float?

Ayuh,...

Backflush it from the Motor side, out to the lower unit side,...
With the lower unit Off of course....

It sounds like you've got a Blockage there....

Thanks for your response and I'll try back flushing. Question though. Earlier when upper and lower were conected I was able to run water back through the hose that hooks into block in reverse direction toward stern drive and water came out the pee hole at botton of upper and out the pick up holes in bottom. Does this elimate possiblility of blockage?

That sounds Free,+ Clear...

What did the Old impeller look like,.??

Did you find All the broken pieces,..??

A missing vane could be acting as a 1 way valve,..??

The old one was worn but no missing pieces. I haven't tried this in the water yet and have only been running water to prop with the ear muffs, or whatever you call them. Could it just be sucking to much air this way?

You do have the water on Full Blast,..?? Right,..??

That is a good question and I'm not 100% sure, but if I had to guess I'd say no. The water from house hose was not full blast. Do you think it could be that simple?? I sure hope so. So what is the offical name of those ear muffs?

Thanks so much for your help Bond-O. I really hope it is that simple. Now I just need to figure out the shift problem that I created when I took it apart the first time then I'll put back together and run water full blast. Oh yeah, and there is that reverse hook problem too, but I have to handle these one at a time.
