Water pump not pumping?

Been a while since I posted last. I got out once last year for a day :( Pulled the cover off the boat and threw in the battery. Fired it up (Ran really poorly.) Threw a whole can of seafoam in the tank with about 2 gallons of regular gas with a 50:1 mix of oil. Choked it out by pouring a bunch of seafoam into the carb while running. Let it stand. Started it up and blew a bunch of crap out of the exhaust. Running a bit better.

Shut it down for the night.

Today... no water pumping out while it runs. I pulled the little grate off of the bottom bracket and there was a spacer in between the screww that ran from one side to the other that broke up. I am wondering if some of it possibly got sucked into the system somehow. Is it a difficult thing to pull apart and clean out?

This motor is a 77 Merc 402 40HP OB. I've never taken the lower unit off of a motor before and I am assuming that it is necessary to perform maintenance on the cooling system. Maybe I could just hook a shop vac up and suck things through it in reverse? :)

I'm on vacation this week and dying to go fishing in Orillia a few times.

Can't say enough good things about Seafoam y the way:)

Re: Water pump not pumping?

It sounds like you need to rebuild the waterpump. I recommend you purcahse a service manual and the necessary parts.

Hmmmm

I was hoping it was an easier answer than that :) I guess I'll be looking for a manual now :)
