Re: water pump on 1971 6hp evinrude
If the motor is a 1971, you do not need to pull the powerhead. This is why having a factory manual is so important, if you don't know the motor you are working on intimately. If you don't have one, I suggest getting one asap. They can be purchased here at iboats, or through other web sites.
There is a standard shift rod connector (Part #303794) in your motor but there is no access plate, as is found in the larger OMC motors. To get to the connector, remove the four bolts that secure the gear case to the exhaust housing. You will then be able pull down on the gearcase, separating the two by a half inch or so. As Sandquino correctly stated, that will be just enough to get a screwdriver or 1/4" drive socket (you can use either) into the space, for removal of the screw. Remove the screw completely because the rod has an indented end, which the screws enters. I usually remove the lower screw.
If the gearcase does not want to drop, it may be because of the pin the is located at the top of the driveshaft - you will not be able to see this pin, which is there to hold the driveshaft seals in place. If the pin is not lined up with a slot that is molded into the top of the exhaust housing, it won't drop, so you will have to rotate the driveshaft until it does.
