So I just bought my first boat. I guess I am not too smart but not too stupid as I bought one with a few things appart.

The stern drive is removed and this water pump part . Its a 5 inch long 1 inch diameter thing that helps cool the engine. Is this the impeller? Its a 2.5 L 4 cylender engine. Gm I guess if that helps. I was told the part is 100$ . My question is (since I noticed on these forums these go bad often)

How often will this part fail? The fact this part is bad would that cause any harm to the engine itself? I guess he found it while he was in there changing some baring so he found it before it did harm, told me he ran out of time so he never fixed it. I am always weary of ppl when they make excuses and just dont fix the issue they had with it so any insight with this issue would be helpful.

So in revision Stern Drive is removed but in good shape, is this normal to remove the Stern Drive to fix this part? and the 5inch diameter piece needs replacing it helps cool the engine. Any help to identify what I asked is helpful. I have rebult car engines and I believe I can do anything to the motor if has to but would hate to replace this part and have something more synister happen while I am out on the water. Thanks Gary

Also he said I could put the old one back on and it would be fine but while its appart I might as well replace it. Does this make sense?

Re: Water pump or impeller question .

The impeller is the water pump in the drive. The 5" piece your talking about, I think is the water tube. the impeller looks like a 6 legged star fish from the top. And it sits in a white, black or blue housing.
Is this a Merc? i cant remember. If so here is a link to some Merc part numbers. Thumb through it, there are good reads in the Adults only pages also.
But the most important thing is get a manual and read it.

If all else fails a pic is worth a 1000 discriptions.

I was told the Stern Drive is removed right now. I really dont know parts by name so I am guessing that is what he had to take off to change a baring.

Thats the who's what sterndrive. Its a inboard motor .

Ok its a OMC I/O 400/800 Stringer Model Part needed Water Pump Drive Shaft for the Stern Drive part number not available but I have the OMC Stern Drive repair manual its number 33 on the manual.

Basically the person repaired a baring that was bad and came across this spline being damaged.. I saw the spline and it doesnt look good he said may work fine but since its all appart might as well fix it.

I think I have a new stern drive water pump its all shiny and new and also it has all new gaskets.. This is the only part that is keeping me from the water.

1983 Model Number 982740 ( omc stringer 400) the water pump shaft is 909753.
I am not saying that it is the same for 82 but if the model number on the outdrive is the same someone here can tell you if it takes the same shaft.
