I have a 1960 5.5 evinrude fisherman model 5520. Sometimes it has water spraying out the exhaust and sometime it doesn't. Is this the impeller??. Is the impeller replaced by just removing the lower unit on this motor, or does power head have to come off?

I believe you are referring to the exhaust relief ports on the rear of the leg. There will be a mist of spent cooling water from there when the t stats open. That is why it is intermittent.

That is not to say of course that your impeller/water pump replacement is not due. When was it last done>?

There should be water discharged out the backside any time the motor is running. Yes, you have to remove the powerhead. Use a new 306205 powerhead gasket and a new 303355 gasket and 303347 o-ring on the carbon seal assembly. This is extremely important.

Wise to replace the impeller if you do not know it's history or vintage.

Thanks guys, I didn't have it deep enough in the tank and pump wasn't priming.
