my 1979 merc 200hp been sitting for several weeks went to the lake this past week-end it fired right up, however while i was idling around waiting to pick up passengers, the heat alarm sounds, i looked back and reved the engin and saw the water from the tell tail spew out out a good stream then the alarm quit. But after we idled thru the the no wake zone and got up on plane ,iam looking back and i dont see much tell teail water comming out and sure enuff the alarm goes off again as iam turning around the kill switch popped off without my knowing and i figured i blew it up. So u might imagine how relieved i was today when i thot to go out and check the kill switch and found it had popped off, i hooked up the ear muffs and she fired right up but no water from the telltail i let it idle for only a couple minutes but turned it off before any alarm . FINALY the Question... should i see water comming out all the time on a 79 200hp merc? it used to just kinda spit and sputter water out until i reved it up then a good stream would flow . anyway i got my manual and some tools ready to do a water pump for the first time, any tips and warnings would be greatly appreciated.( i checked the pee hole , appears to be clear)thanx in advance all

Yes - the tell tale should be strong at all times!

If you motor is drained (that is, when out of the water) and you start it on muffs, it is ok if there is no water for the first seconds as the waterjacket fills before pressure rises and makes the tell strong.

With the manual you should be able to do the impeller job - take good care when you diassemble and make notes of parts' order and place.

From your description I'd say the old impeller was worn (weak) and all your safety systems worked OK.
