Hello, I have a 1979 johnson 35hp 35E79A.

The problem I am running into is the water pump kit # 0391631 contains a waterpump plate which has a smaller hole than the the one I removed. So which one is it supposed to have and could using the incorrect plate cause problems? And why do they give me 3 gaskets as opposed to the 2 I see? One above and one below the plate. 2 of the gaskets in the kit are the same.

I have attached a picture to show you what I'm looking at. Thanks for any imput.

Also I heard rumor I am supposed to silicone the the metal water pump case into the plastic housing?

Getting extra parts from a "kit" is very common. Just use the ones that fit your application (under and over the plate). I always keep the extra parts. The plate gaskets should be sealed but, I would avoid the silicone and use a good grade gasket sealer (3M #847 or equal). If the diameter of the hole bothers you, run a drill through it to match the old one. Personally, I don't think it would make any difference.

The water hole on the new plate is smaller. I am talking about the ablong hole. I am not going to attempt drilling or grinding it.

I just want to know which plate is supposed to be in there, or will it upset the correct flow of water through the engine:confused:

Here I circled the areas of concern.

I need to get this thing back together today. I could just buff the gasket off the old one and re-use. But the surface is scratched and scarred.

If the surface of the old wear plate is scorewd, it's junk. Check the BRP Evinrude website to make sure you got the right kit (0388891).

Its the right kit so I am putting it in. Thanks. I have been messaging tashasdaddy with no response. Until I found out why. Very sad to here but the most helpful person I have ever dealt with.

It is the correct kit as you know. The plate installed may be from a different motor perhaps, or they modified the slot. Regardless, dont worry about it. I would not put any silicone anywhere on an outboard. With a gasket, I also would not bother with the 847, as it is mainly metal to metal sealer. You could add gasket sealing compound to the gasket, but I personally don't bother. A little GSC on the housing screws can help. Motors without a gasket I have sealed under the impeller plate with 847. Grease the splines of the drive shaft, DO NOT forget a new o ring up there, dont forget the impeller key, watch lining up the water line with the grommet, so as not to pinch the flow off, bolt her up and get back on the water.

Good luck.
