I have an old merc 50 , no water through tell tale so changed impellor, with lower leg removed i put a drill on prop nut to spin drive shaft and its just not pumping any water out, there are no blockages as far as I can see, impellor is keyed properly, this was done with muffs on,can anyone give me some advise as to why its not pumping as it looks quite simple in design

thanks in advance
Tim

Re: water pump problem!

If you are spinning the prop shaft and the gears are in neutral, the drive shaft will not spin.

Is the key installed in the impeller. It makes the impeller turn with the drive shaft. Go to bam marine and search for parts by picture. Find your model and serial number and go to gear housing. It will show the key that goes in the impaeller and drive shaft.

Re: water pump problem!

I used this same drill test prior to installing the lower unit back on the motor, my first attemp failed to pump water. My problem was the pump impeller wasn't completly submerged in water, filled the tub a little more and all went as planned.
I know this may sound to simple, but it was my problem with the ld drill pre-test. Once on the motor she worked fine.

Jerry

Re: water pump problem!

If the key is in place and the shaft is turning, it should work properly. Make sure the vanes of the impeller are facing the proper direction.

just out of interest, do the vanes lay backwoods as the shaft spins?

The tips of the impeller drag behind as the shaft rotates clockwise.

so long as its keyed impellor fins will sort themselves out,did you replace gaskets and housing as well? or just impellor?

just impellor,as nothing else looked to bad, would slight wear make the difference, does it all have to be 100% to work? once again , thanks for all your input!!

Re: water pump problem!

just spun pump with the shaft instead of prop and bingo, doing it from the prop was obviously spinning it in reverse, thanks for all your input chaps much appreciated , Tim
