does anyone know how long after the motor is started and taken off high idle the water should start coming out that top hole. i'm not sure if i may need a new impeller it was working fine a week ago but i've only had the boat a couple of weeks and today was the first time i started it at home in the driveway. it started up fine and i idled it high for about 30 seconds but no water came out the top hole, it did kinda blow water out of the two holes between the lower unit and the enigne and I didnt know if I was going to burn the motor up or not. It is a '94 force 50. Please give me any advice you can. THANKS!!

Re: !water pump problem!

please tell me you had a pair of water muffs on it pushing water into it.....usually water will start pumping good within 10 seconds or less... my advice, dont ever use water muffs...most of them always suck....dont start your boat unless you have the whole lower unit in water

yeah I did have muffs on it and the hose on full blast. but when I bought it the guy had it hooked up to muffs and there was water coming out the top hole, but I didnt look at it until the motor had been running a minute or two. since I only ran it for less than 30 seconds, should I try it again and wait longer or could that do damage to the engine? Also, I never let it get to it's base idle point, I had the idle lever at high for the 20-30 secomds while it was on.

If you just got the boat you should replace the impeller and take a good look at the houseing for scraches and or pitting.

I take it you don't have a tell- tail on it.Check out the thread for installing one.

Mine pumps with in 4 seconds of starting and thats with muffs, I just dont run it a long time.

Try this, Put the muffs on it, making sure they fit good, & snug, and turn the water on just a little, (only 1/4-1/2 a turn of the faucet) Not Full Force! then start the motor, and idle it, you should see water coming out the exhust holes in a few seconds, too much water pressure defeats the circulation., this is what works for me.

I always used the muffs, but for some unknown reason they didnt work this year. I took the advice of others and used a large tub of water, with two heavy duty plastic garbage bags. one inside the other up past the water pump, tied securly. fill tub with water, then fill bags. bag filling will displace water out of the tub. The water pump then had normal operating conditions. good luck
