I am in the process of rebuilding a power head off a 1978 johnson 115 . I know its a good idea to change the water pump assembly while I have it apart. My question is what do I look for to tell if it is ok and doesn't need replacement. It was working fine when motor locked up. Also my old temp. guage is not working how do I install a new one . ie: where do I connect it to on the motor? When I got the boat it was not hooked up .
Thanks,
KYHunter

Re: Water pump Question

You might as well. It's cheap, compared to the rest of the engine rebuild. As for the temp. gauge, I don't know the answer to that.

Re: Water pump Question

There is a sensor in the head that has a brown wire that goes to the controls. That is for the overheat horn. The sensor for a temp guage is mounted on the outside of the engine and attached to one of the head bolts. The end of the sensor touches the head. Sooo it seems like yours is missing.

I've seen the brown wire if its the one that is sealed in a small hole about the size of dime. Where can I get a new alarm horn and how is it wired ? Brown to horn and and a ground ?
Thanks kyhunter
