Blowing air through the holes won't hurt anything. Won't help anything either.

Running on muffs does not tell you a thing about the water pump because you are forcing the water through with the hose pressure. It would go through even if there was no pump impeller in there.

Put the durn boat in the water and start it up. Water should spray out the holes. If it doesn't, replace the water pump.

If you don't know the history of the water pump you should replace it anyway. If it still has the original aluminum pump housing, install a complete new pump kit that has a plastic housing and stainless steel liners. Way,way better then the old aluminum ones.

Nothing to fear with the electric. Be sure to disconnect the wires at the top end and tie something to them to aid in getting them back up in there when reinstalling the lower unit.

That motor takes special oil in the lower unit. Evinrude Premium Blend. You might as well get a can of it while you are at the dealer buying the pump parts and change the oil. Dirty or water contaminated oil is the chief problems with the lower unit shifting.

Re: water pump question

most of the discharge water exits the prop as mentioned, unless it is in the water with some back pressure, little water will come out those holes if any,it is a wise move to take the time and put a new pump or impeller in anyway

k i checked the thermostat first it was stuck closed pulled it started the motor in a barrel pumped water out them holes like a champ so the impeller should be good, it shouldnt hurt to run it with out the thermostat untill i get a replacement should it
