Water Pump Question

I have a 77ish, 20 hp merc that needs a new water pump. I'm going to change it myself and I had a question. I did use the search function above but I couldn't find what I was lookin for.

So... my question is, when installing the water pump, do I need to use the black silicone and if so where do I need to put it. I have watched YouTube videos and some of the people use it and some don't.

I don't. Just use the O rings and gaskets that came with your kit.
