I just replaced the water pump in my 1998 200hp Johnson Ocean Runner. I replaced the impeller and housing(bought the kit). The job seamed to go very smooth.

My question for the group is: Should there be excess water coming out between the space where the lower unit bolts to the intermidiate housing? There is a small gap (1/16) in this area. I do not remember seeing this last year when I ran it with the ear muffs. It was difficult to tell if the hose pressure was causing this excess water to come out.

Can someone tell me what the water pressure should be at idle. I am going to try and run it in a 55 gallon drum over the next day or two to check the pressure without the hose.

Any help woud be appreiciated

Thanks, Pat

Pat, the motor is designed specifically to allow water to exit between the Midsection and the LU.

You should have 5+ PSI or so at idle. My '98 Johnny 150HP builds to 30 PSI at full throttle. You should see a solid stream out the telltale at idle

My 200HP 97 Ocean Pro does the same thing. 5 psi or so around idle and roughly 30PSI at higher RPM.

Not sure how it acts on muffs in the drive as I always just use the flushing port.

pat they leak at the joint between lower unit and mid .
after tearing down it will hurt nothing
running it in a 55 gallon drum wont work verywell
if you are running it on muffs with moderate water pressure you should have a strong stream .clean tell tale line run it on muffs at idle feel your heads if you can keep your hand on the head for 8 or 10 second and you have no overheat alarm sounding ,you should put it in the water and run it
but test your overheat alarm before putting in water , i have taken mine to the launch and ran it on the trailer at idle in neutral for awhile after repair
before unloading .[but there is a free launch 5 minutes from my house ]
they also make some heat sticks that melt at certain temp
or you can use a gun that registers temp .
