Hi everyone. I need to replace the water pump unit in my 1978 1150 tower of power motor. I just ordered parts today at Merc dealer ... going to be 91 dollars. Just a bit ago, I looked on this site and found the same thing for 41 dollars. Easy choice huh ? However, I am new to boating, so I have this to ask, how good is Sierra and Mallory compared to original merc parts for my motor. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Re: water pump replacement

Aftermarket parts are almost always cheaper than OEM. Sometimes they are superior as well.

On that waterpump kit, there are several flavors, with confusing names. You may have bought an impellor, gasket set and upper pump component. The sierra kit might just be impeller and gasket kit. The pump base is also avail, and has a new driveshaft seal, which you need to replace sometimes.

Re: water pump replacement

Even though I ordered Merc parts, I am going to cancel that and order from here. I get the complete water pump assembly for less than $50 ,which includes shipping. Merc order was $91. Thanks Chris for you reply.
