water pump sealing

when putting the water pump back together i noticed alot of water coming from the middle of the pump where the gaskets are, is there something i should use to seal the gaskets from leaking?

The gaskets are there to provide the seal, and don't normally require any extra adhesive. If your leak is excessive, it may explain why your impellers are short lived, and the lack of water at your tell-tale.<br /><br />Have you removed and inspected all of the water pump seals and gaskets? Checked water pump housing for cracks? If not, it would be a good idea given your recent issues.<br /><br />I'm not familar with motors from the 60's, and not sure if they are arranged differently than the newer ones.

thanks AMD, just a question have you heard of any ear muffs that do not work correctly? , and do you know how long the water should take to come out of the telltale once started? thanks

You can expect a delay for water to come out the telltale, as often the thermostat takes a while to open up. As for time.... I'd be concerned if I didnt see it in a minute or so at idle speeds. Hard to guesstimate.<br /><br />Only way earmuffs wouldn't work, is if they did not cover the intake ports properly. You'd be the best judge of that based on what you've seen so far.
