I'm a newbie here...
:confused:I recently bought a sailboat with an Evinrude 9.9 on it. When I use it, the water coming out of the "**** drain" at the back appears to just dribble out. However, at the front of the "shank" between the gudgeons a goodly spray comes out and sprays against the back of the clamp plate. (I hope you can mentally picture this.)
My thought is that the cooling water is not quite making it up to the power head, and may be why the engine shut off on me the last time I was using it. It did run again in a test barrel just fine, but still not much water coming out of the pisser.
Apparently it's a 1982 model, and I have no book for it.
I'll sit back and listen now...:(

When was the last time the impeller was changed?

Kinda sounds like the o-ring at the top of the water tube has given out. Pictures would definitely help though.

I have no idea. The motor is as I bought it, 2 month ago. I sorta figure that the impeller needs to be replaced, however the water spray out of the shank bothers me. I'll try to get some pics of it and post them.

If it's shutting down from overheating, dont run it any more until it's fixed! Or not for more than a couple of minutes at a time.

No, it's not normal for water to come out there, it looks like it could be the grommet at the top of the water tube. It's common on the 9.9/15's.

Change the impeller by default on an engine new to you then find out why the water is coming out there.

Also, your engine is probably a salty thus you should try and flush it whenever you can (tough when it's an aux on sailboat though). Also a lot of salty's have a lot of salt/crud build up inside the cooling passages. Did it come to you from a salt water location also?

I'm a regular Keys visitor and boater there Mac, whereabouts are you?

Correct on the salty thing, the boat/motor came from Jupiter, FL and was last used on the ICW going to Biscayne Bay...
I will change the impeller first, and look for o-ring issues in the shank. Thanks for the info. When corrected, the boat/motor will be used on Lake Monroe in Sanford, FL, as I live in Deltona (north of Orlando). The Keys thing is a slight misnomer, as I only go camping there when I can. Mostly at Bahia Honda or John Pennecamp. I do love it there though...
If the sailboat thing works out, the ultimate trip will be a week or two sailing the Keys!

I also visit Bahia Honda and John Pennecamp regularly when down there. We usually kayak, but have also sailed all around in a friends 27' tri... A whole lotta fun...Last year we took it over to the Bahamas for a week :) Way fun!

I also do some volunteer web work down there... Check out the site:

Very well done on the website.
The motor is on a 1986 Catalina 22 swing keel.
This is my first sailboat, so I'm still learning.

A Catalina 22 is supposed to be one of the better trailer sailors... I've wanted one for awhile... I recently had a '73 Seafarer 24'er but it was a heavy old tub... a 22'er would be perfect... You should have fun in her...

Yes, I think the C-22 is going to work out quite well. That is, if I can get it out of, or back into, the marina and back on the trailer. The last time I tried, the engine quit running (see start of thread above) and I ended up getting blown into a larger boat nearby. Now I'm signed up for sailing class... maybe I won't need the engine anymore!

Yep... Engine quitting when docking is real bad. On any boat.

But you will always need an engine so get it running well. You'll need it for entering and exiting the marina and when the wind dies :)

And big boats dont like it when you hit them :(

Re: Water pump squirter drain

Here's what happened to me...

I changed the water pump for the first time, in my life, on my little 5hp. When putting the lower unit back on I apparently did not get the tube that runs from the water pump to the power head. I had water squirting out of 2 holes near the lower unit. I took it off and re-intalled it and the problem was gone.

What I figured was happening was the water was just filling up in the mid section and the exhaust was forcing it out. IMO, change the impeller anyways and pay a little more attention than I did when assembling!!!
