Water pump will not prime/pump

I have a '89 OMC 5.0L and a Omc Cobra outdrive, after dewinterizing I attached my earmuffs and started the engine, the temperature climbed fast so I shut it down. I pulled the hose off of the thermostat housing that goes down to my impeller water pump, started the engine and no water comes out. I went ahead and replaced the impeller, housing, plate, the whole works, turned the water back on to my muffs, started the engine and still no water. I attached my garden hose to the hose from the impeller at the thermostat housing to back flush and the water came out just fine down at the pickup holes where I attach my muffs. If I hold my muffs tightly against the lower unit so as to make a better seal and start the engine water will come out the top at my thermostat housing where it is supposed to. I am lost, my water pump will not pick up water/prime. Please help

I found my own problem. When I put the new water pump housing on the o-ring housing gasket had slipped. The new water pump impeller was sucking air. unfortunately it only takes about a minute for the impeller to over heat and start to melt. I got another one and made sure the housing was sealed properly, it now pumps all the water the motor needs. I thought I would post my solution since no one posted a response to try and help me out
