Thank you in advance for youre help! Volvo 3.0 Larson lxi 190 volvo sx drive
Heres my dillemma. Last summer I pulled the plug on the block and the manifold to winterize it last year. This year I decided to replace the impellar 3rd year since was done last from where i bought the boat.so got the new impellar on the boat but I cannot get pump to siphon water on muffs start fine runs fine just gets hot and feeling hoses on top of engine doesnt feel to be pumping water.
Is there some sort of priming i am supposed to do to start the process or what?

You didn't cross the hoses to the pump right?

I do not believe so but I have removed input to impellar housing and water gets to it from muffs. The other Hose goes to the water pump!
If I fill the hoses located above the water pump to try to get it primed it just comes out the out drive

If you remove the hose at the pump with water on the muffs, you get water out right? Can't get more primed than that.

Do you have them hooked up as shown in the image below? If not, you now need an impeller.

When you replaced the impeller, did you replace the oring? If not, that may be your problem. If the pump sucks air, it will not pull water from the drive to the pump.

Brand new o ring as well only thing different rom when removed issthe housing seems to swivel up and down before removal of old one it seemed to be stationary. however I have poured water to impellar from top hose to give extra protection against failure to not burn it up and i did not see any leaks

You need to explain what you mean by that.

Have you taken the hose off going to the manifold for a few seconds to confirm there is no water being pumped to it?

I appologize let me re explain. When I removed the old Impellar Housing it had no play in it to go up down sideways or any other direction. I removed 3 screws to housing and alot of a guey black substance on the outside of the housing that resembles tar not sure exactly what.
For reinstall of new impellar I slid new impellar With glycerin on followed by the housing and then screwed back in 3 bolts until tight.
Now Impellar housing swivels up and down does not do so while running but if grabbed you can twist up and down. Yes the bolts are tight just as tight as when they were removed!

Is the woodruf key (halfmoon shape) in place with the new impeller? If that is not there, the impeller won't rotate. Just a tought.....

No key on his pump, it has a splined shaft.

Bradford:
If it won't pull water from the drive, either you don't have near enough water flow to the drive, or you have an air leak between the drive and the pump.

I would suggest back the boat into the water, start it up and see if you have water coming out of the pump to the thermostat housing. Just remove the hose from the t-stat housing and aim it into the bilge and start the engine. You should see water within 10 seconds. If not, shut it off. You have problems.

I battled a similar issue the first two years I had my boat. It seamed like there was an air lock or something, but it turned out that the pump was sucking air. On my pump the hoses slid over a plastic "insert" pressed into the metal pump. I replaced the impellor several times to no avail. A mechanic buddy of mine suggested it might be leaking at this junction. A little "emergency" silicone tape and she sucked water just fine. I have since replaced the pump - the new one is solid brass with no plastic - and have not had any problems. The down side is that is one expensive pump!

Re: Water Pump wont Prime? probably simple!Any Ideas

I recently went through some issues with my own raw water pump on an AQ231B. When I installed mine I found the same problem, it wiggled quite a bit as I ran the engine and wow it seemed way off. I pulled it off and examined it and found that I had indexed the pump on the pulley incorrectly. While installing my pump I didn't line things up properly, after proper installing it still didn't work. After trying a new impeller, and ensuring that the water flow was not restricted what so ever my last recourse was to replace the raw water pump. With a new pump it now flows water properly, my thoughts are that in the process of incorrectly installing the pump I managed to damage the shaft and make it out of round, causing it to not provide suction. Not sure if that helps at all but that is what I found.

So that being said, if you had to remove the pump from the pulley, double check that you re-installed it properly and it is flush against the drive pulley, if not it may have become damaged in the process and a new impeller may not fix the issue.

Ok I just found the problem it was due to installation error ...I had my wife bend down and replace the impellar as i walked her through it. Mainly because its tough for a fat boy to get down in there she fits much better! So i Finally broke down and pulled it off and found the old o ring was left on as well as the new o ring. So the lesson for the day is if you got 2 o rings on youre impellar you may as well have no orings on youre impellar!:D
