Water pump working?? '75 Johnson 115hp

I need to know how I know if my water pump is working. I know, it sounds like a stupid question, but I really need to know. I have had conflicting answers. On my engine ('75 Johnson 115 hp) it has two holes where the water comes out. Now, it doesnt pour out or even drain for that matter. But there is a little water spitting out, but really not much. I can put my finger in the whole and it is wet. So, I know that the water is getting there. Any help would be appreciated.

The two holes you speak of are the exhaust ports, there should be a slight stream or mist of water exiting there once the thermostat opens up, its difficult to say just how much. At higher rpms most of the water is diverted through the exhaust at the prop.<br /><br />I would suggest if you have any doubts replace both the water pump/impeller and the thermostat, if for no other reason peace of mind and you'll know its been done. As far as difficulty I think you'll definately want to have the OEM manual, after looking at the parts list/diagram for your motor I beleive the t'stat is actually called a vernatherm.<br /><br />You can probably pick up a manual on Ebay or at Kencook.com or MarineEngine.com, ebay is usually much less expensive though.<br /><br />You can veiw parts lists/diagrams of your motor at the BRP web site, or iShopMarine.com, the t'stat/vernatherm is listed under exhaust housing and the water pump under gearcase.<br /><br />Impeller: OEM p/n 0777212 about 35.00<br />Aftermarket Sierra p/n 18-3043 about 25.00<br /><br />Water pump kit: OEM p/n 0439140 'bout 80.00, Sierra p/n 18-3384 'bout 35.00<br /><br />For the t'stat/vernatherm, gasket etc. OEM around 35.00-40.00 Sierra would be less<br /><br />Iboats carries the Sierra brand aftermarket parts, ishopmarine and your local dealer can probably get either the OEM or Sierra brand parts.<br /><br />Hope this helps and Good Luck with your motor ;)

Bare in mind that if you are running this engine on the hose ,that not very much water will exit the exhaust relief ports,as does when the engine is submerged in water with back pressure on the thru hub exhaust.

Ok. Maybe that's the case, cause I was running it on a waterhose. Maybe I should take it out prior to committing to replace the water pump. Is there anything else that I should do?

This is the best advice on this thread.If you don't know when, or it's been more than two years of engine use since the waterpump and T/stats were replaced,it's time.

Ok. I appreciate your help. Again, how tough is it to replace them? Could an amature with a book do it?

Also, is there a problem using the aftermarket parts or should I purchase the higher priced parts?

With just some good basic mechanical(tool using) ability,it's a relatively easy task.Always good to use a service manual on your first attempt to help walk you through the steps.If you can master the shift rod disconnect the rest is easy.I recommend factory dealer parts.There not that much more on a waterpump and T/stat.

Sure, were all amatures' at some point and there's plenty of knowledgeable people on the forums that are very willing to give good advise if you run into problems. Go for it ;)

Those 2 exhaust reliefs will have nothing coming out when the engine's idling cold, a little mist as she starts to warm up, and a heavy 'rain' when warmed up running at higher throttle openings. There's no telltale on that motor.<br /><br />There is a overheat alarm - either a horn in your control box, or a light on your dash. Check to make sure it's working. The heat sensor is on the starboard head, and has a grey wire going to it. There's a coupling about a foot up the wire from the sensor. Gently slide the black rubber boot off it, and ground the bare wire connector with the ignition turned on. Hear the horn? OK.<br /><br />There are plenty of Johnsons out there with 10yr old+ impellers, so don't panic. Nonetheless, impeller failure is one of the leading causes of death for those old motors, so put it on your to-do-soon list. In the meantime, watch the horn/light like a hawk, & keep in mind you may hurt the motor anyway. By the time the horn goes off, the motor can already be too hot (reason they put separate temp sensors on each head on the later-model V4s). If you don't change the impeller yourself, should be around 100-125 at a dealer. <br /><br />If the motor is cooling properly, the outside of the cylinder walls will be 125-140 degrees F (forget the exact number) when the motor is fully warmed up. You can leave your fingers on it for 2 or 3 seconds when it's that temp - so we're talking hot, but not enough to burn your fingers. If the motor's just a little warmer than the lake, your thermostat's either stuck open or been taken out. Those old single thermostat systems don't stick as often as the tiny twin thermostats they put in the 1978+ and newer motors, but it depends on how much saltwater the motors seen. I'd see to the impeller first for sure, unless the thermostat's stuck closed (they usually stick open). <br /><br />Carbs clean?
