Water pump

I have a 1991 Mariner 150 mag. 2 ser#0D007551. I replaced the water pump in it this weekend. The reason is that it was only running about 2psi. @ ideling and 8psi @WOT. Now it is about 7psi and 12psi. But at ideling it shows 5psi on the gauge but there is none coming out the p hole. it only comes out when you idel it up to about 1000rpm's. I have looked at the lines to make sure that it is not clogged up and it is not. Is this normal or sould there always be water coming out the p hole.

I have the same engine, only a 1989 model and mine pees all the time.<br />4 to 6 psi at idle and anywhere from 10 to 15 at 5K RPM's.<br /><br />And this is on a water pump that has not been changed in 3 years.

Could it be that your thermostat is not opening and allowing the motor to pee? When was the last time thermostat was replaced? Are you sure the vanes on the impeller where all bent in the same direction when you installed it?. I know it's a hassle to do, but you might take it back off and make sure. (Been there,done that)

Thank you for the replies. I am looking at the thermostats today and see if they look right. but i have never replaced them. I am sure that I put the impeller in the right way but I guess it would not hurt to look again. Is the p hole suppose to be at the end of the line? Mine has a tee and one line goes to the phole and the other i am not for sure, it looks like it goes to the exhaust. The pressure gauge tee's off some where in the middle of the system. Does all of this sound right?

Simple way to check thermostats is to put each one in a pan of water on the kitchen stove and heat up the water. Watch the thermostat as the temp rises. Each one should open up as it reaches operating temp. pull them out and they should close as they cool. Or, just buy a brand new thermostat without checking. they are not that expensive.
