when replacing the water pump on a 1971 evinrude outborad
does the impeller and cover go on from the top of the drive shafter
or do you pull the drive shaft out of the gear case and put in on from the
bottom.......

Re: water pump

Depends. What motor are you working on? Some have a pin through the top of the shaft. In that case is is easier to pull the shaft out of the gearcase.

Re: water pump

The pump parts are assembled over the top end of the drive shaft. In fact, the shaft won't even come out without major work.

Re: water pump

So, the 71 horsepower motor that was a 70 horsepower now is a 40 horsepower? There is no thermostat on a 1971 40hp.

Re: water pump

DUH!!!!! thanks for the note on the thermostat...........
it is a 40 hp evinrude when i had the water jacket plate off of the
cyl. heads and i ran it at first no water moved then after 2-3 min
water shot came out really well..... i assumed there was a thermostat...
since i had taken one out of a 1966 eveinrude 40 hp Lark
i am going to replace the impeller just to be on the safe side..........
thanks again for the help
i am really not an idiot,,,, i am rebuilding and restoring 3 boats at the
same time,,,,,,glutton for punishment i guess... 2 are 40 hp one is 1966 and 1 is 1971 and ther other one is 70 hp..... i do have all of them running and am
close to taking for sea trial.........
