Re: water pump

This diagram will show exactly.

Add some dish detergent to the fins of the impeller blades, oil the splines of the drive shaft, and clean out the water intake area while you have the lu down. This is also a good time to clean the exhaust and flush water or compressed air up the water line. Have the t stats been recently replaced?

Also be sure that the water line does not knock the grommet (in the diagram) on top of the impeller housing aside while lining it all back up. It will restrict water flow, giving you over heat issues on re start.

This video may help

Re: water pump

yes there is and o-ring that goes between the housing and the cup
you must be useing sierra .
theres a paper gasket under plate then there is and o-ring between the housing and cup
then there is a o-ring on the houseing to plate
some drive shafts have a o-ring on the shaft at top
check your thermos and poppetts . its worth the time.

Re: water pump

is it a sierra why are they bad? so is not a ring between the plate and impeller but the kit i have has the cup and the housing apart so when i install the cup into housing i should have a o ring in there

Re: water pump

Some of the new impellers have a recessed area on only one side. That recessed area goes down on the plate with an o-ring between it and the plate.

The newer complete pump kits look like the attached diagram.

Re: water pump

Now I am confused. I just replaced the impller on mine. 1972-85hp rude. I called up and asked the dealer and they told me the "o" ring goes on top of the grommet which sits on top of the housing. However at the top of the shaft just below the splines is a resessed space that looks like a "o" ring should or could go.

Also after watching the video , that is not the way I put my impeller in. I kind of forced it into the housing and then put it on the shaft.

Re: water pump

It depends on the pump. Many had an o-ring on top of the metal impeller housing. Most have a large rubber ring that goes between the pump housing and the plate. All the V4 pumps that I know of had a gasket under the plate. The new replacement pump kits are like the one in the diagram and have a o-ring under the impeller.

All driveshafts had a ring at the top to keep water out of the crank, but that really is not part of the water pump. The OEM complete kits supplied that top o-ring for the driveshaft along with the Moly Lube to go on the splines.
