Hi Guys I have a question. When i start up my 1989 Force outboard 125 hp , at idle the water pump dose,nt put out any water. But when i raise the RPM up then it will pump water. Put it back in idle and it will not pump water. I checked the propeller and its ok. Does anybody have any ideals.

Thanks Buda

Re: Water pump

You checked the Propeller or Impeller?

Next is this with the engine in a barrel, muffs or on the water?

Re: Water pump

I had the muffs on it. Yes i did mean impeller sorry. I never had a problem with it before. I part way rebuilded the motor. I honed the cyclinders , put in new rings standard size. Everything else looked good. It runs and idles good except for the water pump,no water at idle. Raise the RPM and you got water. I,m stumped i guess i'll try a new IMPELLER haha this time.

Thanks Buda

Re: Water pump

Putting in a new impeller wouldn't hurt. But I'd run it down to the ramp. If you just want to test it, you dont need to take it off the trailer just float the boat and fire it up and see if it spits water when idling.

I'm not sure but I do know my outboard is like that in a barrel. But on the water spits out water right away.
Could be the same issue. Muffs might not supply enough pressure to pull the water at idle. IE: motor leg need to be submerged deeper.

Re: Water pump

I'll take to the ramp and try it. One other thing i forgot to mention is, my tach was working when i took the motor off to work on it. But it don't now. I checked the fuses all ok, i double checked the wiring on the motor and its ok

Thanks again Buda

Re: Water pump

I once had had the same problem. The motor didn't pump water to the peehole as it was running idle on muff/a barrel as it used to. However, it pumped fine as it was running on a lake/river. I ended up changing a new water impeller and it pumps a good stream of water to the peehole. This gives me a good feeling to see water stream from the peehole. I don't worry any more. :)

Re: Water pump

Your engine shouldn't have come with one.......so it depends where you or the previous owner installed the tell-tale. In front of the thermostat housing on top is ideal. I played with different locations. If you have it on the wrong side of the thermostat, it won't pee until the thermostat opens. A 1989 Force 150 at an idle spits out water about 3 feet. At 3000 rpm, it spits it out about 12 feet. (Using the above mentioned location for a tell-tale fitting.)

If the idle is set too slow, it will spit water intermittently, as if it has air in the system.

Re: Water pump

I have a 1983 90 HO Chrysler and installed a tell tail at the top as Robert mentioned above. It pees out at idle with muffs attached almost as soon as it starts running. It just takes a second or so to get up there. I would suspect a worn impeller.

Re: Water pump

Ordered a new impeller today and as soon as i get i will take the lower unit off and replace the impeller. Plus i'll check the motor over real good.
