Water Pump ???

I installed a new water pump in the lower end of my newly acquired 73' 135 evinrude. How can I tell if it's working properly? <br /><br />Right now it appears that water comes out of two holes (1 on either side of the gearcase). It's a steady sream. I also notice a little water slowly coming out between where the gear case meets the exaust housing. Is this normal? Water does not come out of the 2 exaust holes that are on the upper part of the exaust housing just below the power head. Just exaust is coming out here and the prop.<br /><br />I'm running the motor with a flusher & connected via garden hose.<br /><br />Thanks in advance,<br /><br />Greg Hodges

Can you put your hand on the cylinder head while running (after 5 to 10 min. running)? Motor should be running somewhere near 140 to 150 deg.<br /><br />Don't worry about the water coming from the drain holes on the LU.<br /><br />Is any water coming from the tell tale port (typically on the starboard side lower cover)?

tell tale = does it look like the motor is peeing off to one side?

Hi<br />Leaking where the gearcase joins the leg can be an indication of a poor connection between the top of the water pump and the tube that carries the water up the leg to the powerhead. It could be misaligned or the rubber seal could be damaged. If there is sufficient water to cool the engine still it MAY run like that but a better test than a garden hose is to run it in a tank of water be sure the tank is clean first.<br />Best regards

It was "peeing" from the port side out a hole in the gearcase. As far as the temp, I didn't run it for longer than a few minutes. <br /><br />The water tubes may not be aligning correctly. I didn't have water tube guides that the manual refers to. Can these be purchased?<br /><br />Thanks again,<br /><br />Greg

Greg, if you're talking about the grommet which goes into the pump adapter (where the water tube enters the pump), it's manditory. It's helpful to put that into the adapter with some hardening Permatex or gasket cement on the outside to keep it in place when replacing the LU.

Hi Jim,<br /><br />On top of my water pump, I put 2 rubber bushings, 1 over each water tube hole. above that was mounted a plastic triangule that had 3 holes 1 for each of the water tubes and 1 for the drive shaft. The piece is screwed to the top of the waterpump. Inserted in the drive shaft hole on the bottom side of this plastic piece is the driveshaft seal. On the top side (again on the driveshaft hole is a rubber grommet. <br /><br />My kit came with everything but the plastic triangle. I took this off the old pump. The kit did come with new screws.<br /><br />It looks as though the water tubes slip into the plastic trangle piece and into the rubber bushings. <br /><br />Does this sound right?<br /><br />The manual mentions "not to lose the plastic water tube guides." They appear to be a plastic tube about 2" or 3". They seem to be put on top of each of the tub holes to make it "easy" for them to line up.<br /><br />Thanks again,<br /><br />Greg
