water pump??

I was recently using my 1971 60hp evinrude for the first time since i rebuilt the carbs, replaced the fuel pump, and all new fuel lines (including the line from the tank to the engine). It ran great for about a day and a half, and then suddenly when running at wot the motor completely shut down. The engine previously had been sitting unused for a few years, so i suspect that the maybe the impeller in the water pump went bad from sitting...My question is if there is any reason to suspect something other than the water pump,if so what else could it be, and in any case have i caused any damage?

Re: water pump??

I can think of about 10 reasons it may have quit, including gremlins and the Gods. We need a little more info. Did it overheat, did it loose spark, no fuel, will it start now, have you done a compression test.......????????

Re: water pump??

I don't believe it overheated (i had just left the dock and was maybe running for good 5 to 10 seconds at wot),I immediately checked the connections in the fuel system and everything seemed fine, and it did fire up right after it shut down, but would run for only a few seconds and then would die out. so it did have spark. I haven't done a compression test as i dont have the tools for it. i cant tell if it was peeing any water as the pee hole is convieniently under the water line.

Re: water pump??

Ironically enough i wish i had a portable tank...I have a 12 gallon built in tank. Im assuming that its vented through the overflow. Its the original metal tank i believe. I replaced the fuel line from where u put gas in to the the tank, and the one leading to the overflow last year, but i want to get a plastic if i can ever keep the engine running

That might be where your problem lies. Unscrew the pickup tube out of the tank and see if the screen on the end of it is stopped up or rusted over.
Had a problem with mine and finally traced it back to the tank. There was a lot of rust in it.

Good ID's from bubba.....I think I would also check the spark. Usually when an engine just "shuts down", it has lost spark. And if you don't know the last time the water pump was serviced, now might be a good time. Sometimes setting is a lot tougher than running on a water pump impeller.

Hey bubba.......I drink like a fish all day long and still don't ketch nothin'....what the heck's up with that????

Re: water pump??

Thanks for all your help guys...I checked the screen on the overflow outlet and it seemed fine, but im getting a new tank regardless. I think i'll feel more confident with a plastic one. Regardless of what the problem turns out to be im going to replace the pump and impeller since i found out it was last replace about 8 years ago. If you guys have any other suggestions about improvements i could make to the motor or about anything else i love to know as im excited to own this OMC motor and want to keep it running for years to come
