May be I had this in the wrong forum. Any on have any comments? I have a few quick question regarding replacement water pumps. I have read on previous posts the mention of high pressure and/or high volume water pumps. Is there such a thing? When I look for a replacement for my 1987 V6 150XP I can only find one part #5001594. I had just replaced my water pump and I have 6 psi at idle 12-14 psi at 3500 and 16-18 psi WOT. I have heard and read that 10 psi is a minimum WOT pressure and some that use high pressure pumps (if there is such a thing) get upwards of 25 psi pressure. I have just purchased a digital laser temprature reader and I intend to check my head temprature at idle and WOT throttle.
I beleive that the thermostats are 143 degrees. Is this the head temprature I should get at idle and WOT?

Re: Water Pumps and Head Temprature

Water pressure specs depend on the specific model number on the motor. There are substantial differences in pressure on certain engines depending if they have 20" or 25-30" shaft lengths. Yours are about right for that motor.

Head temps should be 140 degrees, plus or minus 15 for most OMC-BRP engines. Above about 2000 rpm, the pressure relief valves open and engine temp is cooler, again for most motors. At WOT, usually you will find the head temps about 25-50 degrees warmer than the intake water temp.
