WATER SCREEN REPLACEMENT?

I have a 1989 Evinrude 70 VTO. I need to replace the water screen because the other one is broken (hunk chipped out of it). I have a SELOC manual, but it does not give instructions on how to replace it. I know I have to remove the impeller and housing to get to it. I can tell that much...But my question is do I need to remove the gear cover or whatever it is called underneath the impeller housing to get to the water screen? Also, I removed the phillips head screw just next to the screen on the starboard side. Was that a mistake?
Thanks
Cal

Re: WATER SCREEN REPLACEMENT?

Put some sealer on the o ring on that screw and put it back in.It retains the pinion bearing.

Once you remve the waterpump and plate, you can get at the screen.Just break it out of there, clean the passage and slide the new part down in.

DHP

yes BIG mistake. however not fatal. you really should get another oring for it. that screw locks the lower driveshaft bearing. I usually use gel seal on the threads.
remove the water pump and wear plate, use a long pair of needle nose to withdraw the old screen paying careful attention to the curved side of the old screen and its orientation, if you look on the screen you will see a set of tabs that lock it in place on the top hole on each side of the gearcase, this becomes important later. once the old screen is out clean out any corrosion, sand mud or pieces of the old screen.
now place the screen in the hole with the curved side correctly oriented and push it down until the tabs lock it in place. now its a matter of reassembly and a good time to replace the pump kit.

Re: WATER SCREEN REPLACEMENT?

I did pull the impeller and all that and have a replacement kit. The problem getting to the screen is that the bearing retainer cap (under the water pump plate) that has four screws in it keeps me from getting the new screen in. The screen is bigger than the opening because that cap is round and covers a hair of the opening to get the old screen out and the new one in. Do I force it in? if so, how without breaking it?
Thanks

Re: WATER SCREEN REPLACEMENT?

I recently had the exact same problem when rebuilding a 1986 Johnson 60 hp. The supplied plastic screen part was simply way too big for the opening. No way the new one could ever fit. More than a hair too big. I would have needed to destroy it to attempt to slide it down there. So I just left the old one in place, despite the few holes it had in it. Either you and I both got the wrong part, or the wrong part is being sold.

Maybe you have to pull that cap part way up the driveshaft to get clearance. Can't say I've seen this problem, but I also havn't replaced more than a half dozen of these screens. The cap is actually a bearing housing, and usually can be gently pryed up using a screw driver on each side.

DHP

The part # should be 314175 and should be a tight fit but you should not have to remove upper bearing housing.

Re: WATER SCREEN REPLACEMENT?

On the 3 cylinder motors, the upper bearing housing is in the way due to the large diameter of the bearing housing flange. 4 screws out and pry it up, and the water inlet screen will slip right in.

On the V-4 motors, there is enough clearance so the bearing housing does not have to be removed.

yep, 314175 is the one that will not fit unless you do exactly what seahorse advises.

I did want to open up an extra can of worms by doing this, so I decided to live with my old screen and its holes and not replace it.

Re: WATER SCREEN REPLACEMENT?

Thanks everyone. I got the flange up and off and the screen was easy to get to. Appreciate the help.
Cal
