I own a 2004 yamaha 90HP, 2 stroke. I was surprised that yamaha did not install the filter as a standard part. Should I have it installed? Is it something very involved to do?

They are a must in my book. They will keep water and crud out of your motor.

I already have the filter, I was asking if someone else had a Seaswirl Striper with a filter installed so I could see the location. And then decide if I wanted mine to be located in the same area. I was thinking of mounting my filter inside the transom to keep the water off. And the flying sinker's and other stuff that happens back there.

I have mine mounted on the port inside of the transom and have never had any problems with it getting in the way or things hiting it.
