Water Shutter / Flapper Removal

My 2007 Sea Ray 195 Sport with Merc 5.0 TKS / Alpha One Gen 2 recently overheated and I am in the process of replacing the parts that got burnt up. When I got to the water shutters, all that was left of them was the metal pin that holds the shutters in place. The actual flaps are gone. Seeing that there was a lot of smoke, I am guessing that they got melted in the Y pipe.

My question for you all is should I just install my new flappers and get the boat back in the water or should I do some more digging around and try to locate the lost flaps. If I should continue my search, were else should I look?

So far I have been told not to worry about it, while others have suggested pulling the outdrive or the motor. Others have mentioned that I should pull the y pipe, however I think I would need to pull the motor in order to do that.

Any other suggestions or recommendations?

Ayuh,... Pull the drive,+ dig out the pieces from there....
If ya Don't,... It'll probably be down on Power, because it won't be able to Exhale....

If I pull the drive, are there any gaskets I need to purchase before reinstalling the drive? To my knowledge, the drive has never been pulled before so I want to make sure I have all the right gaskets to complete the job.

This is what you need: http://www.mercruiserparts.com/showSpecialPicture.asp?pn=35996A1 OEM part number 27-35996A1, Your local dealer will have them. Hmmm seems there is a second part number 27-94996Q2 I don't know which is the newer, but both appear to be exactly same kit. Your dealer will know.

The shutters are rubber coated steel, so only the rubber will burn off, four pieces is a lot of metal to be left in the exhaust pipe. Best bet is to get them out of there. They may be hung up at the forward end of the exhaust bellows, or bellhousing, I have found that a flexible grabber tool (like this http://www.idealtruevalue.com/servlet/the-24067/Detail) is handy for fishing things out of tight places. good luck.

Thanks for the info Stonyloam. I called my dealer and have a gasket kit on the way.

I was told that sometimes the metal passes through, however I really don't want to take any chances which is why I am pulling the outdrive and hopefully finding any remaining pieces.

I just really want to try and avoid having to pull the motor as some have suggested.

You might want to have an alignment tool ready when you put your drive back on, you did say it's been years.
