Water Spraying from behind my boat????

I have a 13ft. inflatable with a old 20hp outboard. My problem is when I start to gain speed a spray of water comes up from behind the transom; the faster I go the more the water sprays. The water will come over the transom and into the boat. I took a look and it seems that the water is hitting the lower of the outboard and spraying up in a fan. Anyone have any ideas as to how I can fix it?

Trimming the motor might help. As well as check to insure the motor is at the correct height. The anit cavation plate should be 1 inch below the bottom of the transom.

If your motor is too low you will create more drag (Slow the boat) and you will get the result you are seeing. If it is mounted too high then the prop will ventilate (suck air) and you will lose performance. In most cases you should start with the plate even with the bottom of your transom, Then adjust as needed from there.

Do you happen to have a long shaft motor (20") on a short shaft boat (15") that's usually what happens ;)
