(V6 200hp 88'). Started it up today and had a full stream out the tell tale. Opened the boat and I noticed the pee stream was very weak. I stopped and it didn't improve plus the water that was coming was hot, could only keep my hand in it for 5 seconds max. However, temp gauge indicated that it wasn't overheating (about 99.9% sure the gauge and temp sensor is working).

Eventually water stopped coming out the pee hole. I shut the engine down and blew down the tell tale hole. Was very hard to push air through it. After I did that water started coming out again albeit a small amount.

I made it back to the dock, used some steel wire to stick up the tell tale but no gunk came out. After trying to blow some more air through it, the water stream came back to about 75% of its normal strength.

Solutions (ideas):
-Get a compressor and blow out all the lines.
-Put in new t-stats (which I already have, plus gaskets)
-New impeller (which I have as well, a kit).
-Never played with the poppit valve.

My dock is in a place with plenty of weeds and marine growth. Somewhat brackish too

-andy

Impeller first! T-stats second...

Allright. I guess I will do all three. I've never dropped the lower unit, any potential pitfalls to be aware of. Leave it in neutral right.

-Thanks everybody
andy

Forward is probably better so when you are reinstalling the lower unit you can turn the prop to align the drive shaft into the crank shaft...Don't the thermostats control the amount of water coming out the indicator hole.??..

Re: Water stopped flowing out the tell-tale

going on what Rodbolt suggested for my 50hp, backflush your telltale with water-but wait til Rodbolt says its ok for your motor 1st as I don't know if water will get into your cyls on your particular motor. The water pressure does the job a load better than compressed air (can vouch for this-it worked a treat for me)

Andy, pull the pee hole hose from the cowling and use a water hose w/attachment to squirt water back up the hose, the 35/50 #s should not harm anything. I have done this w/o any problems. You probably have a chunck of weed or grass in the too big to come out of the smaller end of the cowling.

I will do it all. However, forgot to say that the shaft seemed very warm to the touch.

Re: Water stopped flowing out the tell-tale

Should water (maybe it's not water) being coming out the relief ports (the ports just below the cowling in the rear of the engine) at idle speeds.

I am going to replace everything I can, just for peace of mind. Can I just clean the poppit and spring or should I get a repair kit (diaphram, spring, poppit, gaskets?)

I have installed a water pressure gauge. Where should I tap into the system. I was going to connect behind the flywheel.

-andy

Re: Water stopped flowing out the tell-tale

same thing happened with my honda 50hp.
befeore you spend a lot of $$ on parts you
may not need, try a good long blast of compressed
air up the tube, while the motor is running

it worked for me.
the motor is getting hot because there is
a blockage and the cooling water is not
circulating properly

Re: Water stopped flowing out the tell-tale

http://www.tflx.com/PDF/99376.pdf These are the instructions offered by Telflex. The plug on top of the block is the nornal the point to install. There are small drain holes inside the rear of the cowling that allow water to drain out and will come out of the relief port area. Check the poppit valve cover drain hole, is it leaking? If so the diaphram is ruptured. I have never changed my poppit, but if I do I will do the hole thing, but reinstall the old spring. I was reading a couple of posts about the new springs not being very good.

Re: Water stopped flowing out the tell-tale

Alright here is an update. Took apart the poppit valve and found big piece of cardboard enlarge into the spring, so it wasn't going to open. Everything else looked good, except the gaskets but I replaced everything anyways.

Wanted to take a look at the t-stats...get this there are none. I am going to call the guy who rebuilt it tomorrow and ask him what the deal is. I installed two new ones with gaskets. No wonder it needed so much time to warm up in the fall.

I will be dropping the L/U and replacing the impeller on sat. and will give the final update.

-andy

Gettin there!! It is sometimes amazing what you find in used or "rebuilt" engines. I know firsthand.

Re: Water stopped flowing out the tell-tale

That poppet problem will explain the loss of water flow at rpms below 3000.... And when it is stuck open, it will exit water through the upper exhaust ports...

You may have it fixed!!!

Re: Water stopped flowing out the tell-tale

But I would replace the impeller so you know it is ok and have a base line for your own reference...

Re: Water stopped flowing out the tell-tale

I will certainly replace the impeller...

What do you guys think about this:
I just tested my new t-stats and they were fully closed (or at least appeared to be) at 149 degrees and fully open at 160-162.

The t-stats are 143 degree t-stats, shouldn't they start to open at 143 or is what I am seeing common. I thought 149 was a bit high for appearing fully closed. I don't want to put them in if they are junk.

-thanks
andy
