Water stopper valve in Exhaust

My boat had a recent problem which turned out to be water in the right hand cylinder bank. I discovered the water had got into the engine from the exhaust manifold. Further investigation showed that I only have a water stopper valve in the exhaust feeding the left cylinders.. Should there also be a water stopper valve in the right hand exhaust? The Mercruiser manual only seems to show one stopper valve which just seems very odd to me? I would expect two valves (one in each exhaust) or none? I find it a strange coincedence that the side with no water stopper valve was the same side that had water in all the cylinders. I am hoping that fitting a stopper valve in the right side will prevent any further re-occurance of this..

Can anyone confirm if there should be one or two water stopper valves? Its a mercruiser Alpha II drive with a V6 4.3L engine, 1991 model

Thanks Gary

Of course the parts diagram only shows one. It makes the drawing a lot less cluttered.
Example drawing

Have a look at the example drawing above, but then scroll down and look at the Qty Req column. That tells the real story.

thanks Don, But on the WEB site that I used, it says 1 in the quantity used, that's what really confused me!! Your diagram says 2, so I will order a second valve and install it. 2 seems far more logical.
On a seperate note, what is the general feeling about SELOC manuals? I bought one without researching first, the book seemed very thick so I assumed it would have lots of usefull information, but the two times I have used it, I failed to find what I was looking for in it? So I am not very impressed so far.

The OEM Merc manual is about the same thickness as your Seloc, but it is only about the 83 to 93 V6 engines. Your seloc covers Type 1, Alpha/MR and Bravo I and II outdrives and all engines by Mercruiser, Ford and GM 4-cylinder, in-line 6, V6 and V8 engines.

So basically:

Seloc has a LITTLE information about a LOT of engines and drives.

Merc OEM Manuals have a LOT of information about a FEW V6 engines only (No Drives that's a seperate manual)

Re: Water stopper valve in Exhaust

Well unfortunately for me, I only want information on the merc V6 engine and stern drive!! I couldn't care less about the ford and V8 engines!! Sounds like I should order a merc manual, then I can use the seloc as a wheel chock for the boat.

I changed the impellor as several people suggested, the old one looked just fine, but it's changed anyway!! A very simple job that took less than an hour to do (will give me some peace of mind!). Thanks for everyone's help.. I can't wait to get the second stopper valve, put the whole thing back together and try it out on the lake..

Cheers Gary

Re: Water stopper valve in Exhaust

You need OEM manual #7 for your engine. You can probably find one on ebay, many people do. For the drive, I assume when you said Alpha II that it's the Alpha I Gen II drive, if so then that manual is free online at http://www.boatfix.com/merc/Servmanl/14/14cover.pdf

Just an FYI
Those stopper valve are actually called water shutters, while flapper valves is probably the most common name for them.

Thanks Don, I have copied all the PDF's to my computer (in case the WEB site ever dissapears) so I should not have any issues with fixing my stern drive in the future!! I will look on ebay for Vol7 of the mercruiser service manual.

Many thanks Gary
