I am looking at a shoot thru hull transducer for my new boat because I don't want to drill holes in the transom or hull. I'm look at one at has a remote temperature sensor, which I would like, but not sure how it mounts. Does that require drilling a hole in the transom or hull? Fyi, I have a Lowrance HD-5.

All of the transducers that I have seen require tham to actually be in the water to get a true temp reading. You might be able to find a water temp gauge with a separate external transducer and just 5200 it to the outside of the hull.

Or drag a thermometer on a string behind the boat. :D

I use a thru hull transducer. I could got the transducer with a built-in temp sensor but decided to use a seperate temp and speed sensor instead. The S/T senors mounts on the transom and you use a Y-cable to connect the transducer and sensors to the head unit.

I'm running a Furuno but I imagine that the HDS has similar capabilites
