Has anyone used high temp silicon sealant in place of the rubber grommets at the top of the water tube(s)? I have a 1984 Evinrude 15. The input tube grommet is a mess, and they are expensive. I was wondering is a glob of silicone would do the job. Anybody tried it?

For about $8 I would replace the grommet. Why take a chance on silicone, and maybe overheat the motor.

i agree with the other responses......fix it right the first time or you run the risk of having errant rtv blocking water passages.

Never use silly cone on an OB boat motor, especially if you don't want an even more expensive repair say like the whole power head. Just pop for the right part.
