1994 Force 90hp OB. Took it out once. Checked gear lube. Yellow and Milky. Changed lube and drain/fill plug gaskets.Took out again. Same lube condition. Pulled prop and retainer ring. Outer rear seal looks ok. Do not have puller to remove bearing spool.---Removed lower unit.Alot of water came out of front two mounting bolts. Upper seal and spline seal look fine. Only water visible is at the base of water pump housing and all over where the lower shift rod goes into the gear case.----- My theory is that since the water pump housing and the shift rod share the gear case cover as a base, the water intrusion must be occuring across that area. I am picking up a complete seal kit and impellar and replacing everything. My question is: Have I approached this correctly???? Thank you in advance for your input.

Generally if the D/S seal or the shift seal is leaking there will be traces of oil around them.

TMD

Joe,
it is very common for the drive shaft seals to go bad on those gear boxes you are on the right track but it would be a good idea to pressure test it just to make sure there is a special socket you will need to remove the nut that holds the bearing carrier in place and there is a special puller that removes the bearing carrier you may have to pay someone to disassemble this for you. good luck, bret

If you need further assistance please email me @ forcepower01@yahoo.com. thanks,Bret
