Waterline seal 89 force 85hp two piece shaft

I always had this serviced and today doing my own impeller change when this mystery part fell out and "unless i'm off track" this looks like some kind of adaptation and if so the water line seal would not enter the pump housing...???
did the shop make this gizmo or am I just crazy, heres the pics.
I am taking it to them today to get an explanation just looking for thoughts on this based on the pics, Thanks...

You are way off base. That rubber and stainless collar assembly sits on the top of the shaft and the rubber bears against the crankshaft. This (hopefully) seals water out of the hardened steel crankshaft and (again hopefully) prevents rust that would cold weld the drive shaft in place.

NOW: in the second photo, the water pump is missing the white plastic adapter that plugs into the outlet. It is shown stuck on the water tube in the fourth and fifth photos. This is common.

You can try to install the lower unit with it as it is, but more than likely it will bind and break, then be shoved up the water tube a bit. The pump will leak and not deliver full volume to the engine block. You really need to try to pull it off the tube and plug it into the water pump before installing the lower unit. If it is on so tight that you can not pull it off, you may damage the tube or even pull it out from its seat up top---BIG PIA--you really don't want to do that!

So, if it is stuck that tight, use a sharp wood chisel and break it off, buy a new one, and lubricate the inside and the tube with a little grease before installing the lower unit.

by the way I took it to the shop who last worked on it and they were too busy to talk to me about it and the new boss just said "Oh don't bother putting that back its just a PIA"...Needless to say I will be using a new Boat shop next time..

I prefer your correct method and will do it right...
