watermuffs on force

someone in a previous thread sounded like force motors should only be run in the water and not out of water with muffs. is this true or did i read into it too much???

The problem with muffs on my 50 horse Force is i cant find any that fit well so to be on the safe side i like to run it in a pail of water when im on land

I tried them with my 125, overheat buzzer goes off every time.

I wouldn't recommend them

Best way to water the motor is to get two things-
1. Bungee cord.
2. 30 gallon or better Trash bag.

Loop the bungie ove the motor leg and put the bag over the bottom of the motor. Fill with water and move the edge of the bag away from the exhaust snout. Move it under the leg behind the snout. Do not run over 1500 RPM. If the water breaks shut'er down.

Enjoy.

Warning: do not put in gear or the bag and water are history. Shut it down immediatly!!!

thanks alot to everyone! im gonna try to get a large tupperware tote to fill with water. ill just have to measure from the bottom of lower unit to well above the water intakes! thanx again

A plastic 55 gallon drum (the type used on the docks) layed long ways on the ground with a section cut out to fit the lower unit in, filled, along with the muffs too works good for me, can even check gear engagement that way. Make sure to block the barrel on both sides so it doesn't roll away!

I have used a 45 gallon plastic trash can. Even though the mice ate holes in the bottom, a little duct tape applied to the inside works well enought to test the motor.

Next time I'll try the trash bag trick.

They have specific muffs for it..years on my 125 muffed and SaltAway...get the right ones confused:)

Do you have a manual? The water pump is at least 2 inches over what you think it would be...No Tupperware made that will be deep enough..but do what ya want..

I think he meant Rubbermaid. Still, I'm not so sure it would be deep enough??? Maybe if you raised the front of the trailer up so the lower unit would get as low as possible???

Then again, a 55 gallon drum on it's side is probably about that same depth.

i bought muffs that are for Chrysler/Force and seem to work fine. I have had mine run for over 20 minutes that way and no troubles. The regular round ones do not fit right, but after talking to a chrylser guy in his shop he sold me a pair of them and they work great. I am greatful to have a Chrysler mechanic so close to me. That being said i also have a tote that i use in the garage when i don't want to take the boat out of the garage and that works fine too although a little messy and smoky in the garage. (open all windows and doors if you run a motor inside your house make sure you have a working co detecor) I have heard you can make some muffs out of the regular ones with the metal clamp. Just cut the circle so it has two flat sides and smash the metal clamp so it fits tighter.

I originally had a problem with a cheap set of regular muffs, but found if you bend the metal bar just enough to get them on over the wide prop gear housing so they are still snug, then put them on from the back, with the bar under the prop at a down angle, they will fit perfectly. Next, just open the water spigot just a little to start, and once you get the motor started, gradually give it more water, but just enough so it doesn't blow out of the muffs excessively. The easy water flow to begin with, then a gradual flow increase finally worked good for me.

when its down the motor touches the ground when im trailered.i figured if i get a tupperware/rubbermaid tote that it would be like 3 inches above the intakes. would that be enough??

I think that would be enough just as long as it is getting enough water, you might have to watch the level pretty close as it will drain the tote pretty quickly below the intakes. But as long as it is spitting water you are good.

Ya need a 28" long, x 20" deep...think at one time I looked..no such animal (just get the right muffs...pretty sure Iboats, right here, has them..
...why play around?? )

just tried the watermuffs and nothing came out of the pee hole! didnt let it run for more than a few seconds because i heard it hurts the impeller but was i shutting it off too soon? does it take time to get water through? it shoots out all around the muffs. hhmmmmm

I have used the muffs on my 85hp without problems. First, make sure the muffs are centered on the water inlet, and not off center at all. Have the water on about 1/2 to 3/4 full. Once the motor starts, it takes a minute or so for the pump to fill the entire engine block and shoot out the exhaust ports. I would not rev it up at all.

If you are worried, then use a garbage can. Its easier to put the can under the motor when empty, then fill it up. Leave the hose running because the motor will shoot some water out the high ports past the can and that water needs to be replaced. Best bet is to fill the can util it is as full as the water line on the motor. The motor will pump much better with this setup than on muffs.
